Across 13+ years of North Florida irrigation, almost every pump call traces back to one of three things. Two sneak up over weeks; one shows up the morning after a thunderstorm.
Impeller wear from sediment and grit.
Ag irrigation pumps run continuous duty in season, and source water carries grit. Impellers wear down, discharge pressure drops, GPM falls, and the system stops reaching the far zones. Dominant slow-decline failure on Newberry watermelon mains and Bradford pasture irrigation: the setup keeps running; the field stops getting watered evenly.
Motor and seal failure on continuous-duty cycles.
Pumps that run 4 to 8 hours a day in season wear bearings and shaft seals faster than well pumps that cycle in short bursts. Centrifugal boosters are especially hard on bearings because they sit above ground in heat and dust. When the seal goes, water shorts the motor; when the bearings go, cavitation noise and overheating set in. Continuous-duty motor ratings matter.
Suction-side leak or foot valve failure.
Above-ground irrigation pumps (centrifugal boosters, line-shaft turbine setups, and residential sprinkler pumps) lose prime when the suction line develops a pinhole or the foot valve stops sealing at the source. The pump spins, cannot pull water, and the system shuts down mid-cycle. Foot valve failure is the single most common cause of "my sprinkler pump will not pull water this morning" calls. Floridan Aquifer wells dominate at 100 to 400 ft: sub-turbine pumps common on ag wells
Most large irrigation pulls in our footprint draw from Floridan Aquifer submersible turbine pumps set deep in cased wells. Sub-turbine is the default for deep-well ag irrigation; line-shaft turbine shows up where the operator wants the motor above ground for easier service. We pull both and recommend based on access, depth, and service-cycle preference.

Hurricane and tropical storm season (June to November) hammers surface-source intakes
Surface-source ag draws (pond, ditch, and river-fed intakes) take on sediment and debris that accelerates impeller wear, and flooding makes that worse. Intake cleaning and impeller checks are a recurring part of our irrigation work throughout the growing season, not just after a named storm.

Summer lightning peaks (July to August): irrigation pump control circuits damaged
Nearby lightning strikes that surge the power line can take out capacitors, relays, and the small electronics in irrigation controllers, same as normal age and wear can. We install surge protection where it makes sense and recommend it after every controller repair, storm-related or not.

North Florida sits on karst limestone. Subsidence shifts the drawdown profile in deep ag wells over the years, which changes what the pump works against. When an old sub-turbine loses capacity gradually, the diagnosis is not always the pump: sometimes the well is changed. We drawdown-test before recommending a pull-and-replace.

Fire ants in pump control boxes and irrigation controllers
Same North Florida issue we see on well-system electrical: ants get into pump control boxes and irrigation controllers, especially in the rainy season. They do not conduct well and stop the contactor from closing. We install pest-blocking foam in the conduit and silicone every opening.

Iron, sulfide, and hardness foul irrigation lines and zone valves over time
Most North Florida well water carries measurable iron (reddish staining), sulfide, and hardness. Over the years, iron coats discharge lines and chokes flow; sediment settles in zone valves and causes partial closures; hardness scales impellers. On residential sprinkler systems fed from a well, a sediment-filter pre-stage upstream of the pump is a real upgrade conversation.

The North Florida ag calendar shapes when irrigation pumps fail and when we schedule work
Newberry watermelon plants from April through July, and pull July through August, peak irrigation demand May through July, and pump failures show up on the hot afternoons. Bradford and Union County hay runs multiple cuttings from spring through fall: irrigation supports the dry stretches between cuttings. Alachua County horse paddocks need year-round watering and freeze-protection in January. We schedule ag work around the calendar; that is the difference between a watered field and a lost row.

Atmospheric pressure caps suction lift at about 25 feet at sea level, less on long ag suction runs with friction loss. Pull harder, and you get cavitation: vapor bubbles collapsing inside the pump, sounds like marbles in the housing, chews impellers to scrap. Fix: shorter suction, larger pipe, or a pump set closer to the water. We design around NPSH on new ag installs.

Transfer pumps and short-coupled turbines are two categories Eric chose not to carry. Different equipment, different parts supply networks, different service expertise. We would rather be excellent at what we do than mediocre across a wider range, so when a customer needs one, we refer out to vendors who specialize. Honest answer, not a side-step.

Ag pumps running 4 to 8 hours daily need continuous-duty rated motors: heavier windings, better thermal capacity, longer bearings. Residential sprinkler pumps running 30 to 60 minutes per zone can use intermittent-duty motors. Putting an intermittent-duty motor on a continuous-duty job burns it out in 18 to 24 months instead of 8 to 10 years. We do not substitute on motor class.

Sub-turbine pumps run submerged in the casing, motor cooled by the water it is pumping: longer life, but a pull is required to service the motor. Line-shaft turbines drive a long vertical shaft from an above-ground motor down to the bowls: easier motor service without pulling pipe. The trade-off comes down to depth, access, and service preference.

Sizing comes down to TDH (total dynamic head) and flow at design pressure. TDH adds static lift, discharge friction, and the working pressure at the heads. Multiply by GPM at peak demand to land HP. Undersized boosters short-cycle and burn motors out years early; oversized boosters waste energy and stress piping. We size to the math, not a default.

GPM per zone times the number of zones running simultaneously times the PSI target at the heads sets the residential sprinkler pump. Typically, 1 HP serves a normal residential lot with zones running one at a time; 1.5 HP to 2 HP serves larger lots with multiple overlapping zones or higher-pressure heads. A wrong-size pump is the second-most-common reason a sprinkler system underperforms, after foot valve issues.

The foot valve sits at the bottom of the suction line and stops water from draining back when the pump shuts off. When it fails (debris, age, spring fatigue), the pump loses prime overnight and will not pull water in the morning.
