Why a jet pump still makes sense in Starke when it does not further west
Starke sits east of the Cody Scarp, and that one line of geology decides what kind of pump a property here can run. East of it, a layer of sand holds water above the limestone. The U.S. Geological Survey puts the water table in this basin generally within 10 feet of land surface, deeper along the basin's eastern edge, over saturated sand more than 80 feet thick in parts of Bradford and Clay counties. Thick, saturated sand near the surface is what makes a suction well possible at all.
A monitoring well near Starke, 32 feet deep, has held water between 0.7 and 7.7 feet below the surface across the past decade of readings. That is shallow water.
It matters because a shallow-well jet is a suction machine with a hard ceiling of about 25 feet. A deep-well jet gets around that with an ejector down in the well; the one-pipe shallow systems common out here do not. And the number that has to stay under the ceiling is not the resting water level. It is the level while the pump is working, after drawdown and pipe friction have taken their share, which always sits lower than the figure a monitoring well records at rest.
