Nitrate is the one you cannot taste, see, or smell
Every other problem we treat announces itself. Iron stains the tub, sulfide smells like rotten eggs, hardness scales the fixtures, tannin tints the water. Nitrate is silent on all four counts: colorless, odorless, tasteless. A well can sit at any level, and the glass on the counter looks identical.
That is why this page skips the symptom list. A nitrate reading stays unknown until somebody takes the measurement.
Why the question comes up on this side of the county
Newberry sits inside a Priority Focus Area under the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Santa Fe River Basin Management Action Plan, adopted in June 2025. The plan attributes about half of the basin's nitrogen loading to farm fertilizer and another 15 percent to livestock waste, and it assigns the City of Newberry an annual reduction target in the Devil's Ear springshed.
Read that carefully, because it is easy to misread. That obligation belongs to the city and to permitted operations. It leaves private wells alone entirely. What the designation tells a homeowner is narrower and more useful: the state has formally identified the ground under this area as the kind where surface nitrogen reaches groundwater.
The plan also aims to reduce that loading, and the measurements suggest it is working. A peer-reviewed study published in 2025 found nitrate concentrations across this basin declining over the decade to 2024. The direction of travel here is downward.

The mechanism is the soil profile. Alachua County's environmental protection department describes the aquifer on this side of the county as overlain by relatively thin sands that permit high recharge and allow pollutants such as nitrate direct access to it. Where thick clay confines the aquifer instead, the same 2025 study records concentrations often below 0.05 milligrams per liter.
What the county measured, including the half that argues against worrying
Alachua County's environmental protection department sampled about 80 private wells across this basin in late 2020 and again in 2021, taking each sample at the spigot closest to the wellhead, before any treatment was installed. That is our own protocol, for the same reason: a sample drawn downstream of a filter describes the filter.
One limitation matters, and stating it plainly beats letting you assume past it. The county publishes those results for the basin, which spans several counties, and that's where it stops. A published Newberry number does not exist, and any company quoting you one has invented it.
For the basin, the median well came back at 0.55 milligrams per liter of nitrate as nitrogen in the first round and 0.59 in the second. The federal and Florida drinking water standard is 10, so the typical well measured at roughly 5 percent of the limit. Anyone telling you that wells around here are generally in trouble is overselling.
The other half of the same dataset is why the reading still matters. Individual results ran from undetected up to 22 milligrams per liter, and three of the roughly 80 wells came back above the 10-milligram standard. The distribution is wide, and the high ones are genuinely high. The county published the numbers and left the question of what separates a high well from a low one open, and nitrate hides at the tap.
UF/IFAS relays the Florida Department of Health recommendation to test a private well annually for nitrate, and before bringing an infant home. The annual part is the part people skip, and it is the part that pays. One reading is a point. Two are a line, and the line is the useful object: a well-steady at 4 sits in a different situation from one that read 1 three years ago and now reads 4, though both are under the standard.

No, and this one is worth getting right because the instinct is common. Boiling drives off water as steam, leaving the nitrate behind, so the concentration in what remains goes up rather than down. Boiling is the wrong move for nitrate in every case.

Very little. Two wells on adjoining properties can draw from different depths through different fracture paths and return different numbers. A neighbor's result is a reason to get your own, and it is not a substitute for one.

It can. Nitrate reaches groundwater from the surface, so recharge and land use both feed into it, and a shallow well responds faster than a deep one. If you are going to pick a month, pick the same month each year so the readings compare.

No. Bacteria is lab work, and we are not a lab, so that one goes out to a state-approved facility. Since Florida guidance puts bacteria and nitrate on the same annual schedule, most people arrange the two together.
